Government policy and process designed to secure borders must be balanced with the need to quickly facilitate the transit of business and personal travellers. Automated Border Processing using biometric technology can assist in meeting the strict security requirements of government while allowing smooth transition of trusted passengers across National borders.

Due to its extensive experience as a Biometrics Systems Integrator, Sagem Sécurité formed in 2004 a strategic partnership with the Australian Customs Service for its Automated Border Processing program. Sagem Sécurité has worked with Australian Customs to develop the world’s first automated border processing solution that incorporates facial recognition and e-passport technologies. Sagem Sécurité is assisting Customs in deploying the solution, known as SmartGate, throughout Australia.

By the end of 2009 SmartGate will be available at all major international airports in Australia providing automated access for eligible Australian and International visitors who hold an e-Passport.
Interest in SmartGate from within the Asia-Pacific is likely to see this technology deployed to other major international airports in our region.
